What is a Buttweld Equal Tee?
A Buttweld Equal Tee is a type of pipe fitting used to connect three pipes of the same diameter at right angles, forming a T-junction within a piping system. This tee fitting allows for fluid or gas flow to be distributed equally among the three branches. It is called “buttweld” because it is welded to the pipes using the buttwelding technique, where the ends of the pipes are beveled to create a smooth surface, and then welded together for a strong and leak-resistant connection. Buttweld Equal Tees are commonly used in various industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical, and construction, where precise distribution of flow is essential for efficient operation.

Technical notes
How the component behaves in the line, and the details to settle before an order is placed.
How it behaves in the line
- Dimension C (run centre-to-end) and M (branch centre-to-end) per B16.9
- Flow split creates turbulence and secondary flow: allow settling length downstream
- Equal tee: all three outlets same NB. Reducing tee: branch outlet is smaller
- Bull tee: branch is larger than run; less common, request confirmation of stock
- Barred tee: internal pig-stop bar welded across branch; used in pig-able pipelines
Confirm when ordering
- Specify Equal or Reducing (give run × run × branch size for reducing)
- Barred tee: specify pig OD so bar dimensions can be sized correctly
- Confirm centre-to-end dimensions match pipe support spacing
Dimensions, wall thicknesses and pressure classes are in the dimension tables; the governing standards are summarised on the standards reference.
